Dr Adewumi Israel Badiora is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. He holds both Man .Sc. and a PhD degree in Urban and Regional Planning (specialising in Community Safety and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) in 2012 and 2016, respectively. Dr. Badiora is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) and a Registered Town Planner with the Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria.

Dr. Badiora has served extensively as a consultant to government and non-state organisations at the international, national, state and city-level. He was an expert consultant on National Survey on Election Security Threats in Nigeria (2018-2019); National Survey on Emerging Security Challenges in Nigeria (2021-2022); facilitator for Urban Studies Foundation (USF) knowledge mobilization on Securing Urban Spaces (2021). He is research project collaborator in Nigeria (Lagos) for “Resilience to Shocks in Informal Settlements of African Cities under Increasing Uncertainty: Co-production for Evidence-Informed Local to City Level Resilience Strategies,” which is financed by the Erasmus Trustfund.

His research interests span community safety planning, urban crime dynamics and prevention through environmental design. Dr. Badiora has authored over 50 scholarly articles in reputable local and international journals and books. He is a recipient of the African Cities Research Consortium (University of Manchester) Research Support Grant. In general, his research works have been able to demonstrate that effective urban planning can actively address most of the insecurity issues in our cities; support and facilitate communities resilience to insecurity when they do materialize; facilitate active participation of all stakeholders to minimize security-related risks while not sacrificing the special physical, design, and historical character of our cities, and maintain a balance between urban security and personal freedom that enhances the quality of life and that of our physical environment.

In his capacity as Acting Head, Dr. Badiora leads, manages and develops the department to achieve the highest possible standards of excellence in teaching, research and community service.

Urban and Regional Planning is the art and science of ordering and managing land-use and environment based on detailed understanding and analysis of societal needs within the socioeconomic and environmental management framework. It is concerned with the spatial ordering of land use, both in urban and rural settings, for the purpose of creating functionally efficient and aesthetically pleasing physical environment for working, circulation and recreation. Therefore, it requires a comprehensive education and training in the planning, design and management of the total environment.
