The Institute of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University, is a strategic academic directorate dedicated to teacher education, professional development, educational research, and lifelong learning. Our History
The Institute of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University, was established in 1989 as a semi-autonomous arm of the Faculty of Education. As a service and research unit of the faculty, it has the strategic academic directorate to promote excellence in teacher education, educational research, professional development, and community-responsive learning. Conceived as a vehicle for educational advancement within and beyond the University, the Institute has continued to provide intellectual leadership in the preparation of competent educators, educational managers, and other professionals in the education sector.

- POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (PGDE)
Programme Overview
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is a three-semester professional qualification designed for graduates from non-education backgrounds (Science, Arts, Social Sciences, etc.) who seek to become professionally trained teachers.
The programme provides a refresher and conversion pathway into the teaching profession, equipping participants with pedagogical knowledge, classroom competence, and professional teaching skills.
Entry Requirements
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university
- Open to graduates from all academic disciplines
- Evidence of academic readiness for professional training

The aim of this programme is to support and enable you to engage with the academic issues of learning and teaching. The taught programme will introduce you to factors which influence the way you teach and a range of teaching methods that can be adopted, plus tutorial time. By the end of the programme you will be able to use the knowledge and understanding of both context and method to develop teaching strategies which are appropriate to the teaching work with which you are involved. Your wider understanding of the learning process will help you to support your students’ learning more effectively. The programme integrates the learning of conceptual knowledge, practical competence and personal development.
The principal educational aims and learning outcomes are to:
- Develop your knowledge, skills and critical
- Understand of academic practice within Higher Education;
- Develop analytical skills to improve your understanding of the dynamic relationships between theory and practice;
- Develop your understanding and repertoire of learning and teaching strategies appropriate to their context – and your ability to select, implement and apply teaching methods appropriately;
- Develop your critical reflection of both your own and general academic practice;
- Enhance your understanding and appreciation of ethical issues and professional values within the boundaries of learning and teaching
- Promote effective student – centred interaction during the sessions that you lead.
- Be abreast in contemporary global issues in education, wellness and knowledge upgrade
Successful completion of the programme awards you with the Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (GCAP).
Requirements:
– Bachelor’s degree (Recommended for tertiary education lecturers with no background in Education. Essential for all lecturers less than SL status but also suitable for all lecturers at all levels; with or without background in education; (and/but) seeking foundational enrichments and recognised certificate to teach in international universities).

3.Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP)
The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) is designed to support and enable academic staff to engage critically, reflectively, and strategically with the complexities of teaching, learning, and assessment in Higher Education.
This advanced programme goes beyond foundational teaching competence to develop a scholarly, research-informed, and leadership-oriented approach to academic practice. It provides participants with a rigorous understanding of the pedagogical, institutional, and policy contexts that shape contemporary Higher Education, while equipping them with the capacity to design, deliver, evaluate, and enhance high-quality learning experiences.
Through a structured combination of taught sessions, guided practice, reflective engagement, and scholarly inquiry, the programme explores key dimensions of curriculum design, assessment strategy, student engagement, quality assurance, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to integrate conceptual knowledge, professional skills, and reflective insight to exercise informed judgement in their teaching practice, contribute to curriculum development, and demonstrate leadership in enhancing student learning within diverse and evolving educational environments.
The programme promotes the integration of theory, practice, and professional identity, enabling participants to align their work with both institutional expectations and international standards of academic practice.
Principal Educational Aims and Learning Outcomes
Participants who successfully complete the PGCAP will be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge and critical understanding of academic practice within Higher Education, including its pedagogical, institutional, and policy dimensions;
- Critically analyse and apply educational theory to inform teaching, learning, and assessment practices, recognising the dynamic relationship between theory, context, and professional action;
- Design, implement, and evaluate curricula and teaching strategies that are inclusive, student-centred, and aligned with intended learning outcomes;
- Employ a wide repertoire of teaching, learning, and assessment methods, selecting and adapting approaches appropriately to diverse learners, disciplines, and delivery modes;
- Engage in critical reflection and scholarly inquiry into their own practice and the wider field of Higher Education, including contributions to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL);
- Demonstrate leadership in academic practice, including contributions to programme development, quality enhancement, and the improvement of student learning experiences;
- Apply principles of quality assurance and academic standards, ensuring alignment with institutional requirements and internationally recognised frameworks;
- Exhibit a strong commitment to ethical practice, professional values, and inclusive education, recognising issues of equity, diversity, and student support;
- Foster meaningful student engagement, promoting active, collaborative, and reflective learning environments that enhance student success and achievement.
Programme Outcome
Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of the: Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP). This qualification positions participants for enhanced academic roles, leadership in teaching and learning, and participation in international academic collaborations, particularly within institutions operating in alignment with global Higher Education standards.

Professor S. A. O. Oladunjoye is a distinguished academic, education leader, and Professor of Language Education with a strong record of institutional service, academic innovation, and strategic administrative leadership. As Director of the Institute of Education, he brings to the role extensive experience in university governance, teacher education, programme development, quality enhancement, staff coordination, and educational transformation.
