Our Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Crop Production course is designed for students who are passionate about plants, food production, and sustainable agriculture. If you are interested in how crops are grown, protected, and improved to feed a growing population, this programme will equip you with both scientific knowledge and practical skills to become an expert in crop production and management.
Course Overview
The programme runs for four years (or three years for Direct Entry students). It combines the study of crop science, soil management, and agricultural technology to equip you with the skills to produce high-quality and high-yield crops sustainably.
You will study areas such as crop physiology, plant breeding, seed technology, pest and disease management, soil fertility, and sustainable agricultural practices. Through fieldwork, laboratory sessions, and farm practice, you will gain valuable hands-on experience that connects theory to real-world farming systems.
By the time you graduate, you will be equipped to work as a crop production specialist, farm manager, agribusiness consultant, or researcher. The course also prepares you for postgraduate studies in agronomy, crop protection, or other agricultural disciplines.
Course Curriculum
The curriculum is based on the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) of the National Universities Commission (NUC). It integrates general agricultural studies, scientific principles, and extensive field training.
You will begin with courses that introduce you to agriculture and the basic sciences:
- Principles of Agriculture
- General Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
- Mathematics and Statistics for Agriculture
- Communication in English
- Nigerian Peoples and Culture
At this level, you will build your foundational knowledge of plants and soils:
- Principles of Crop Production
- Soil Science and Fertility Management
- Plant Anatomy and Physiology
- Agricultural Biochemistry
- Genetics and Plant Breeding
- Computer Applications in Agriculture
Here, you will apply your scientific knowledge to real farming systems:
- Crop Physiology and Ecology
- Arable Crop Production
- Perennial and Plantation Crop Production
- Weed Science and Control
- Pests and Diseases of Crops
- Research Methods in Crop Science
In your final year, you will focus on advanced production systems, technology, and sustainability:
- Crop Production Systems and Management
- Seed Technology and Storage
- Irrigation and Water Management
- Soil and Crop Fertility Evaluation
- Agroforestry and Sustainable Land Use
- Research Project in Crop Production
The programme also includes the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), where you will gain valuable hands-on experience in farms, research institutes, and agribusiness organisations.
Entry Requirements
You can gain admission into the B.Sc. Crop Production programme through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) or Direct Entry:
1. UTME Entry (Four-Year Programme):
- You must have five credit passes in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent, at not more than two sittings. These must include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and one other relevant subject such as Physics, Geography, or Economics.
- You must sit for the UTME with the correct subject combination: English Language, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and one of Mathematics, Physics, or Economics.
- You must also pass the University’s Post-UTME screening exercise.
2. Direct Entry (Three-Year Programme):
- You may be admitted into 200 Level with GCE Advanced Level (A-Level) passes in at least two subjects chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Agricultural Science.
- Holders of National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), or equivalent qualifications in Agriculture or related disciplines may also be considered, provided they meet the O-Level requirements.
Why study at OOU?
Crop production is at the centre of food security and agricultural sustainability. This course prepares you to understand and manage the complex processes involved in growing healthy crops efficiently and sustainably.
You will be taught by experienced lecturers and researchers who bring a blend of academic excellence and practical expertise to the classroom. The learning environment includes modern laboratories, demonstration farms, and access to farm machinery and tools used in real-world crop production.
Through farm practice and the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), you will gain direct experience in crop farming, agronomy, and research. The course also builds your leadership, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, making you employable across the agricultural and agribusiness sectors.
Research Project
In your final year, you will undertake a supervised research project in Crop Production. This project allows you to explore practical and scientific problems such as soil fertility management, crop yield improvement, pest control, irrigation efficiency, or seed technology.
The research project trains you in data collection, analysis, and interpretation, and helps you learn how to present scientific findings clearly and effectively. It is also an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of agricultural science and sustainable food systems in Nigeria and beyond.
Graduation Requirements
Academic Requirements
To graduate with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Crop Production, you must:
- Complete at least four academic sessions (or three for Direct Entry students).
- Pass all compulsory and elective courses prescribed in the curriculum.
- Accumulate the minimum credit units required, including general studies, farm practice, and the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
- Successfully complete and defend a supervised final year research project.
- Maintain good academic standing, discipline, and adherence to University regulations.
Grading and Degree Classification
Your final degree classification is determined by your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), as outlined in the university’s approved grading system:
Upon fulfilling all academic and procedural requirements, you will be awarded the B.Agric. Crop Production, a qualification valued for its focus on sustainable crop management, modern agronomic practices, and the scientific skills required to enhance food security and agricultural productivity.
Career Opportunities
A degree in crop production offers a range of diverse career paths in agriculture and related industries. You can work as a:
- Crop Production Specialist or Agronomist
- Farm or Plantation Manager
- Agricultural Extension or Advisory Officer
- Research Scientist in crop science or plant breeding institutes
- Seed Technologist or Quality Control Officer
- Irrigation or Soil Fertility Consultant
- Entrepreneur in crop farming, agro-processing, or input supply
