Course Overview
The B.Sc. Banking and Finance is a four-year degree (or three years for Direct Entry students) that combines theory with practice. You will learn how banks, stock markets, and financial institutions work and how they contribute to economic growth.
The course covers areas such as principles of banking, corporate finance, investment analysis, risk management, financial markets, and international finance. Along the way, you will build quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills, while also learning how to use financial software and tools.
By the time you graduate, you will have the knowledge and practical experience to work in commercial banks, investment firms, insurance companies, government financial agencies, or to pursue further qualifications in finance and professional certifications such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
Course Curriculum
The curriculum is based on the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
It integrates general studies, core finance courses, and practical exposure through the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
You will begin with broad courses that introduce you to economics, accounting, and business:

At this level, you will focus more on the foundations of financial systems:

Here, you will gain deeper knowledge of financial management and investment analysis:

- Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management

Your final year gives you a strategic and applied perspective on finance:
- International Banking and Finance
- Risk Management and Insurance

In addition to these courses, you will complete the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), which places you in banks, financial institutions, or corporate finance departments to gain practical experience.
Entry Requirements
To study Banking and Finance, you must satisfy either the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) or the Direct Entry route:
1. UTME Entry (Four-Year Programme):
- You must obtain five credit passes in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent at not more than two sittings. These must include English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and two other relevant subjects such as Accounting, Commerce, Government, or Geography.
- You must sit for the UTME with the correct subject combination, usually English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and one other relevant subject.
- You must also pass the University’s Post-UTME screening exercise.
2. Direct Entry (Three-Year Programme):
- You may be admitted into 200 Level with two A-Level passes in subjects such as Economics, Accounting, or Business Management.
- Holders of National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), or equivalent professional qualifications in relevant fields may also be considered, provided they meet the O’Level requirements.

The project builds your skills in research design, critical analysis, and academic writing. It also allows you to connect theory with practice and to explore areas of personal or career interest.
By completing this project, you demonstrate your ability to think independently and contribute to discussions on financial and economic development.
Graduation Requirements
To be awarded a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Banking and Finance, you must:
- Successfully complete a minimum of four academic sessions (or three for Direct Entry students).
- Earn the minimum number of credit units prescribed in the curriculum, which includes general studies, core courses, electives, and the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
- Pass all compulsory courses in banking, finance, economics, and related business areas.
- Complete and defend a final year research project.
- Uphold good conduct and discipline throughout your studies.
Your graduation honours classification will be determined by your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), which could place you in First Class, Second Class (Upper or Lower), or Third Class.

- Apply for and pass the Post-UTME screening exercise.
2. Direct Entry (Three-Year Programme):
- Apply through JAMB Direct Entry, choosing Banking and Finance.
- Provide evidence of relevant A-Level passes, National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), or recognised professional qualifications.
