How to calculate your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) as an OOU Student?

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is a measure of your overall academic performance. It reflects the average of all your grade points earned across all semesters and courses taken since admission. At Olabisi Onabanjo University, your academic performance is measured using a 5-point Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system, which assigns numerical grade points to letter grades as follows:

Calculating your CGPA

Step 1: Identify Your Course Units

Each course has a credit unit value (e.g., 2-unit, 3-unit). This represents the course’s weight in your overall GPA calculation.

Step 2: Determine Your Grade Point (GP) for Each Course

Using the OOU 5-point grading system, match your score in each course to the corresponding Grade Point (GP) from the grading table. Example:

75% in a 3-unit course → GP = 5.0
58% in a 2-unit course → GP = 3.0

Step 3: Calculate Quality Points (QP) for Each Course

Multiply the course credit units by the grade point to get the Quality Points (QP):

Quality Points (QP) = Credit Units × Grade Point
Example: 3-unit course with GP 4.0 → 3 × 4.0 = 12 QP

Step 4: Sum All Quality Points and Credit Units

Add up all the Quality Points (QP) and Credit Units (CU) for the semester:

Total Quality Points (Total QP) = Sum of all QP
Total Credit Units (Total CU) = Sum of all CU
Example: 5 courses totalling 15 units, total QP = 45

Step 5: Calculate Semester GPA

Divide the total quality points by the total credit units to get your Semester GPA:

Semester GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Units
Example: 45 ÷ 15 = 3.0 GPA

Step 6: Calculate Cumulative GPA (CGPA)

Your CGPA is the average of all GPAs across semesters, or equivalently, the total quality points divided by the total credit units for all completed semesters:

CGPA = Total Quality Points for All Semesters ÷ Total Credit Units for All Semesters
Example: If you have 180 total quality points from 60 total units, then:
180 ÷ 60 = 3.0 CGPA

Interpret Your CGPA

The CGPA determines your academic standing or class of degree as follows:

Example Summary

Total Units: 13
Total Quality Points: 49
Semester GPA: 49 ÷ 13 ≈ 3.77

CGPA across semesters is calculated cumulatively using the same method.

Final Note

Always monitor your GPA each semester. Maintaining a strong CGPA is crucial for graduation, scholarships, and postgraduate opportunities.
