Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

If you’re preparing for university education, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is one of the first important steps you’ll take. This annual national entrance exam, organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), is how admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education begins. It serves as the first and most important stage of the university admission process, ensuring a fair and unified system for assessing all candidates across the country.

The UTME tests your knowledge in selected subjects relevant to your intended programme of study and provides an objective basis for evaluating readiness for tertiary education. Your UTME score helps determine whether you are ready to move on to higher education and is crucial for your potential admission to Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU).

Why You Need UTME

UTME isn’t just another test; it’s your ticket into tertiary education. It ensures that everyone’s evaluated fairly and consistently. A strong UTME performance indicates you are academically ready. At OOU, we use your UTME score as a key part of the admission process, making it essential that you pay close attention to this stage. A good UTME score demonstrates that you meet the basic academic threshold required to begin undergraduate studies.

Interpreting Your UTME Score

The UTME is scored out of 400. At OOU, a score of 160 is the minimum you’ll need to qualify for the Post-UTME screening (though some programmes may require a higher score). While exact thresholds vary by institution and course, here’s a general guide:

  • 250 and above: Highly competitive
  • 200–249: Strong standing
  • 160–199: Meets most university minimums
  • Below 160: May not qualify for many programmes

What to Do After You Get Your Result

Once you receive your UTME result:

  1. Confirm your score meets or exceeds the minimum.
  2. Ensure your O-Level results are uploaded to the JAMB Central Admissions Processing System (JAMB CAPS).
  3. If you didn’t already choose OOU, switch to us as your first choice before you register for screening.

Keep an eye on announcements about our Post-UTME Screening so you’re ready when registration opens.

OOU Post-UTME

If your UTME and O’ Level requirements are met, the next step is our Post-UTME Screening Exercise. This is conducted via Computer-Based Test (CBT) at our University ICT Centre, Main Campus. Once registration kicks off on our dedicated portal, you’ll need to register, complete the screening, and await your offer of admission.
