Directorate of Open Distance Learning Centre (ODLC)

The Directorate of the Open and Distance Learning Centre (ODLC) oversees the planning, coordination, and administration of all distance learning activities within the University. It drives the University’s mission to make quality higher education accessible to all, regardless of time, place, or personal circumstances.

Through strategic leadership, the Directorate ensures that all ODLC programmes meet national academic standards and align with the University’s broader vision of academic excellence, innovation, and service to society. It provides governance, quality assurance, and operational support for the effective delivery of technology-enhanced teaching and learning.

Our History

The proposal for the ODLC was formally approved by the University Senate on 1st July 2016, with an initial plan to offer degree programmes in accounting, business administration, economics, computer science, mass communication, microbiology, industrial and labour relations, theatre arts, English education, and business education.

Following the National Universities Commission (NUC) directive, the Centre commenced operations with the B.Sc. Accounting programme, which successfully began admitting students and delivering instruction through a robust digital platform. Additional programmes across other disciplines are currently under development and will be introduced in phases as the Centre expands its academic portfolio.

The ODLC remains a testament to the university’s dedication to creating flexible learning pathways and empowering a new generation of learners to achieve academic and professional success without boundaries.

Our Vision

The Open and Distance Learning Centre of Olabisi Onabanjo University is planned to be a centre of academic excellence where knowledge, skills and values shall be pursued relentlessly to ensure the flowering of human abilities and service to the Nigerian Nation and the world at large in the wider context of traditional wisdom and culture.

Our Mission

To provide access to flexible and high-quality education for our learners and the public through excellence in teaching, research, creative activities and service to the state, society and the world at large.

Our Objectives

The major objective of the ODLC is the attainment of Mass literacy. This can be further broken down into the following objectives:

  1. Expanding full access to education for learners who have diverse and special needs, especially working people, housewives and so on, through an open and distance learning system as a supplement to the existing system of education.
  2. Improving the quality of conventional education through different kinds of support mechanisms and materials by the application of ICT.
  3. Promoting lifelong learning, continuing education and professional development through an open and distance learning system by applying a mixed-mode delivery mechanism.
  4. To provide skill-based education through customised courses to cater for the needs of graduates from the OOU ODL Programmes seeking employment in the national and international job markets.

The primary goal of distance learning is to provide a window of opportunity to the rich array of quality instructional resources available to on-campus students to students anywhere who are committed to higher education but are unable to attend the campus offering their programmes of choice. From the student’s perspective, a seamless web of opportunity is available.

Our Responsibilities

  1. Provide flexible learning conditions in order to accommodate people with special learning needs and help individuals reach their potential through lifelong education.
  2. Provide excellent undergraduate and professional educational programmes and produce high-quality human resources that will promote the development of society.
  3. Admit achievement-oriented and socially responsible learners who will, under competent teaching and professional staff, acquire and develop knowledge, skills, and proper values that will enrich their lives and prepare them to meet the needs and challenges of the contemporary world.
  4. Provide a conducive environment which enhances learners’ learning and character development, and sustain highly competent staff dedicated to the pursuit of teaching, research, and community service.
  5. Pursue viable and relevant research that stimulates economic growth and social advancement of its host community, as well as scientific and technological transformation that meets the challenges of Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
  6. Be in constant contact with relevant institutions, organisations, and bodies within the host community and beyond, and adopt a broad-based consultative approach in its research and learning processes.
  7. Strive to preserve cherished beliefs, values, and traditions of its host community while remaining adaptable to changing conditions and responsive to emerging opportunities.
