Established in 1983, the Department of Surgery is one of the founding units of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences and, since its inception, has provided comprehensive training in general and specialised surgery, preparing medical students to manage surgical conditions with competence and precision. With a strong focus on practical learning, research, and clinical excellence, the department continues to produce skilled doctors.
Vision
To raise a generation of medical doctors who are highly skilled surgically in the management of surgical conditions, both locally and internationally.
Our History
The Department of Surgery is one of the foundation departments of the faculty of clinical sciences (FCS) of Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences (OACHS), Sagamu Campus. The department was established in 1983. It provides training for undergraduate medical students in general surgery and its related specialties.
Academic Programme
The department offers undergraduate programs designed to equip the medical students with adequate knowledge of general surgery and surgical specialties such as Urology, orthopaedic and trauma, pediatric surgery, otorhinolaryngology/ ENT, Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology so as to produce astute clinicians / general practitioners for the nation and the world at large.
It also encompasses anaesthesia and radiology in the final MBChB examination. Teachings are carried out through didactic lectures, seminars, ward rounds, bedside teachings, theatre sessions in the teaching hospital and training in clinical skills.
Research Areas
Research in the department spans surgical areas such as General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Ophthalmology, Urology and Neurosurgery.
Facilities for Student Training
The department has experienced academic staff and facilities to support clinical training and research:
- General surgical and Specialty clinics
- Surgical wards for males, females and children, including an eye ward
- Modular theatre with different suites for the different specialties to perform and demonstrate surgical procedures
- Modern books and Journals
- Conducive lecture halls and classrooms for interactive teaching.

Dr Olubunmi Temitope Bodunde is a Reader / Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. She is a clinician-scientist with clinical and research experience. She obtained her MBChB degree from Ogun State University and a Master’s in Public Health from Olabisi Onabanjo University. A fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, Faculty of Ophthalmology. She also has a fellowship in pediatric Ophthalmology and strabismus with the Nigerian Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (NIPOSS) and a Short-term Fellowship with PBMA’S H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, India. Her research interests is in pediatric ophthalmology, community ophthalmology and general ophthalmology. She is currently the Acting Head of the Department of Surgery.
She is a committed teacher, a hard-working researcher and a passionate clinician. Has always been involved in constant personal and Professional development. Her passion is to better understand childhood ocular disorders and management, especially in the Sub -Saharan Africa. She hopes to achieve this through further professional development as opportunities come and do excellent research, and publish in high-impact journals. Her findings will then be translated into improved practice through advocacy for health policy change. She has given several public lectures, actively engaged in community volunteer activities through cataract surgical eye camps and also as a reviewer for scientific journals. She is the current Chairman of NIPOSS and has over 50 publications in both National and international journals.
In her capacity as Acting Head of Department, she coordinates academic administration, staff co-ordination, curriculum developments, students’ training, mentoring and welfare.
