The department is domiciled in the faculty of Clinical Sciences and is a prerequisite to qualify as a medical doctor. Because of the intercalated curriculum of the medical school, we are in session every day of the year. The department is divided into 4 main units, which are the Foetal-Maternal Medicine, Oncology, Urogynaecology and Reproductive Endocrinology, and Fertility Medicine units.
Teaching is structured, both formal and informal, and we transfer knowledge to the students by allowing them to participate actively in patient care, which eventually determines their interest in specialisation.
Vision
To be a citadel of learning for Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a key post for research in women and reproductive health, producing medical graduates that are locally relevant and globally competitive, championing women’s health
Academic Programmes
The department offers undergraduate programmes designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in the management of obstetrics and gynaecological patients. Students are exposed to hands-on learning through didactic lectures, seminars, ward rounds, bedside teachings, theatre sessions and skills laboratories.
The posting of the medical students is divided into senior and junior clerkships with specific expectations at each level. Teachings are consolidated with clinical meetings and rapport, where all cases treated are discussed and used as learning points. This permits the theoretical knowledge to be concretized.
The students are also made to rotate through subunits like labour room, family planning clinics, gynae emergency and radiology posting for experience in obstetrics and Gynaecological imaging
Research Areas
The department fosters a vibrant academic community where students, resident doctors doing postgraduate programmes and lecturers have robust academic communion, and students are allowed to do research and are guided by the researchers to advance knowledge of obstetrics and gynaecology. Attendance at meetings is a prerequisite to sit for exams, and beyond that, the student’s enthusiasm for knowledge is always encouraging.
They are encouraged to attend conferences that are organised locally. Research in the department spans areas such as:
- General Obstetrics
- General Gynaecology
- Fetomaternal medicine,
- Gynaecological Oncology
- Urogynaecology
- Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility Medicine
Facilities for Student Training
The department is well equipped with facilities to support research and teaching:
- Skills Lab, which is located in the faculty block and is equipped with mannequins for hands-on experience
- Ultrasound scan machine for bedside teaching and clinics.
- Side laboratories for students to be able to do simple lab tests like PCV, urinalysis, and blood sugar
- Departmental library for reading and the use of books.
- Lecture Halls and Classrooms – conducive spaces for interactive and effective teaching.
