MBChB Medicine and Surgery

If you are passionate about understanding the human body, diagnosing illnesses, and helping people live healthier lives, the MBChB Medicine and Surgery programme gives you the training you need to become a medical doctor. This programme prepares you to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases through a deep study of biomedical science, clinical skills, and compassionate patient care. You will learn how the body works, what happens when it fails, and how to use scientific knowledge, clinical reasoning, and professional judgement to guide your decisions as a doctor.

Your training begins with the basic sciences that explain how the human body functions, followed by preclinical subjects that help you recognise how diseases develop. You will then progress into full clinical training at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, where you will learn directly from doctors, observe real patients, participate in clinical rounds, and gain the experience needed to practise confidently. The programme is designed to help you build competence, empathy, and professionalism, the core qualities required in modern medical practice.

Course Overview

The MBChB programme provides a comprehensive, structured medical education built on three major phases:

1. Basic Medical Sciences (100–200 Level)

You will study the scientific foundation of medicine, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and human behaviour. These courses help you understand the normal structure and function of the human body.

2. Basic Clinical Sciences (300–400 Level)

You will learn about diseases—what causes them, how they affect the body, and how they can be prevented or treated. Key subjects include pathology, pharmacology, medical microbiology, immunology, haematology, and epidemiology.

3. Clinical Sciences (400–600 Level)

You will undergo clinical rotations at OOUTH Sagamu, the university’s teaching hospital. You will rotate through major departments such as medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, family medicine, community medicine, radiology, and other specialties. At this stage, you learn by observing and participating in patient care under supervision.

The programme lasts a minimum of six years, depending on your entry path. By the end of your training, you will have the scientific knowledge, technical skills, and professional values required to practise medicine safely and effectively.

Why study at OOU?

Studying Medicine at Olabisi Onabanjo University offers you a training experience built on strong scientific grounding, compassionate patient care, and hands-on clinical exposure. You will learn within the Olabisi Onabanjo College of Health Sciences (OACHS), which houses three specialised faculties—Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences. This gives you access to a complete ecosystem of medical education from your first year to graduation.

Your clinical training takes place at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, where you learn from practising doctors, handle real cases, participate in ward rounds, observe surgeries, and understand how modern hospitals operate. This environment prepares you to develop confidence, clinical reasoning, teamwork, and professional ethics.

The programme is designed to match global standards in medical education, enabling you to compete favourably with graduates from medical schools around the world. You will be supported by experienced lecturers, a structured curriculum, simulation laboratories, research opportunities, and exposure to diverse clinical cases typical of the Nigerian healthcare environment. By the time you graduate, you will be equipped with the knowledge, skill, empathy, and discipline required to practise medicine safely and effectively.

Research Project

Research is a core part of your development as a medical scientist. During your training, especially from the clinical years onward, you will engage in supervised research that helps you understand how scientific inquiry shapes modern medicine.

You will learn how to identify research problems, review scientific literature, collect and analyse data, and present findings clearly. Your project may focus on topics within internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, public health, pharmacology, pathology, obstetrics and gynaecology, or any other medical specialty. This experience strengthens your analytical skills, deepens your understanding of medical science, and prepares you for postgraduate training, evidence-based practice, and lifelong learning.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), you must satisfy the graduation requirements approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Olabisi Onabanjo University. These requirements ensure that every medical graduate is academically grounded, clinically competent, professionally responsible, and fit to practise medicine safely.

Academic Requirements

  1. Complete all core postings and rotations across departments such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Community Medicine, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, and others.
  2. Pass all four Professional MBChB Examinations with a minimum of 50% in each course. For clinical courses, you must also attain at least 50% in the clinical component.
  3. Accumulate the minimum credit units prescribed by the NUC CCMAS and OOU Senate for the MBChB programme.
