The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is one of the core Departments in the Faculty of Clinical Science, dedicated to practical and sound teaching, research, medical and community services. The Department provides services, training and workshops in anaesthesia for General surgery, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ear, nose & throat, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Urology, Pain & palliative care, central intravenous access, emergencies and elective surgeries.

To be a leading centre of excellence in teaching and research in Intensive care management, producing graduates who are globally competitive and locally relevant in the management of surgical and critically ill patients.
Academic Programmes
The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Anaesthesia and Intensive care designed to furnish students with both knowledge and practical skills required in acute and chronic pain management, resuscitation, balanced & safe anaesthesia, airway management, care of the critically-ill patients, physiology, pathology, physics, care of major medical and medical equipment with continuous access to mannikins and teaching aids for hands-on learning through workshops, seminars, theatre and wardrounds sessions in accordance with standard global trends in anaesthesia and intensive care management.

- Adult, paediatric and neonatal airway mannikins- For airway management and intubation training workshops.
- Adult and paediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation manikins
- Invasive central and arterial cannulation models.
- Well-equipped four-bedded intensive care unit
- Anaesthesia machines and mechanical ventilators.
- Well-equipped modular theatres with eight operating rooms.
- Conference rooms and student rooms for teaching in the theatre complex

Dr Oluwakemi Adenike SHOTAYO is a Lecturer, physician and researcher in Anaesthesia and Intensive care, with expertise in critical care management, airway management, paediatric anaesthesia and Neuro-anaesthesia. She had her residency training at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, obtained Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in 2016 and recently completed the critical care research program of the World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care. She is currently serving as the Acting Head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Her research works focus on critical care organization, and management in low-resource regions; sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock management, antibiotics stewardship, oxygen therapy, resuscitations, cardiopulmonary resuscitations, critically-ill trauma care, difficult airway management, paediatric & daycase anaesthesia and neuroanaesthesia She has many publications in national and international reputable journals, and has contributed to advancing knowledge in anaesthesia and critical care through trainings, teachings, mentoring, workshops and collaborative projects.
Dr Shotayo is quite passionate about caring for the critically ill patients, which is a budding speciality in low- and low-income countries and also in ensuring standard and safe practice of anaesthesia for high-risk patients in Low-resource settings. Aiming to bridge the gap in knowledge in the care of the critically ill patients in limited-resource health facilities and communities, and also to improve patients’ outcomes comparably to the global standard. In her capacity as Acting Head of Department, she oversees academic administration, curriculum development, staff coordination, residents and student mentoring. She is committed to promoting a culture of standard ethical practice, academic prowess, world-standard collaborative research, and brilliant innovation within the Department and the Hospital. Her leadership is focused on improving the Department’s visibility and expanding its contributions to solving local and global health burdens.
