The faculty is one of the two pioneer faculties in the Sagamu campus of the university dedicated to the training of medical doctors. It comprises seven departments, namely: anaesthesia, community medicine and primary care, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, radiology and surgery. These departments jointly serve in the last two years of medical undergraduate training. The community medicine and primary care department also offers a master’s degree course in public health, exclusively for medical graduates.
Vision of the Faculty
To be the pivot of training medical doctors who will be equipped with the skills and competencies required to provide medical services that will meet the health needs of Nigerians according to global best practices and to serve as the research hub for common health issues affecting Nigerians to provide evidence-based solutions to common cardiovascular, immunologic, oncologic, infectious and mental disorders in the developing world which will improve and promote healthy living through cutting-edge research.
Our History
The Faculty was established in Sagamu as a component of Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences following the establishment of Ogun State University, now Olabisi Onabanjo University, which first started operation on the 31st of January 1983. The Sagamu State Hospital was made the nucleus of the new Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, now Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, which commenced operation on the 1st January 1986. The Faculty has had several accreditation visits by regulatory bodies. The first Medical and Dental Council visit to the Faculty was on 10th May 1985.
The Faculty currently has seven clinical departments, which comprises of the following: Anaesthesia, Radiology, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Community Medicine and Primary Care, Medicine and Surgery. The faculty has a well-equipped skill acquisition laboratory in addition to excellent training facilities in the teaching hospital.
The Community-Based Medical Education and Services (COBMES) programme of the Faculty is a unique feature of our curriculum during which a period of training is spent in the various communities and secondary care facilities to experience medical practice outside the teaching hospital environment. This is in addition to our Community Medicine and Primary Care programme, which also exposes the students to many healthcare facilities in the community.
The faculty has produced numerous medical doctors who have gone on to become consultants and professors in various fields of medical practice, making outstanding contributions to health care delivery, both nationally and internationally.
Academic Programmes
The faculty teaches undergraduate students at the final and penultimate classes with two professional examinations leading to the award of the MBChB degree: the Part III MBChB examination, comprising of paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology, while the Part IV examination includes community medicine and primary care, medicine, and surgery. These courses are designed to offer medical undergraduates excellent teaching required to make them highly-skilled and competent medical doctors to serve the Nigerian and global communities. The teachings encompass didactic lectures, seminars and tutorial classes and clinical teachings where they are exposed to mandatory hands-on clinical learning.
Departments
Facilities for Student Training
1. Skills Acquisition Laboratory
Clinical students receive hands-on training in a controlled environment using advanced mannequins and simulation tools. This enables them to practise procedures like patient exams and emergency care safely, building skill and confidence before working with real patients.
2. OOUTH Affiliation
Our partnership with the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital provides students with real clinical exposure. Through supervised rotations, they gain practical experience across key medical departments, bridging academic learning with real-world healthcare practice.
3. Lecture Halls, Seminar Rooms, and Classrooms
These are conducive spaces for didactic and interactive teaching using modern audiovisual facilities.
4. Public Health Laboratory and Museum
This is for the demonstration of laboratory specimens relevant to the transmission of diseases and public health in general.
Research Areas
The faculty’s research focus includes evidence-based aspects of preventive and curative medicine with regard to cardiovascular and metabolic health, maternal health, mental health and child health. This focus is emphasised through community-oriented faculty academic activities such as community diagnosis, primary health care and the community-based medical education and services postings, which take medical undergraduates and their supervising teachers into communities.
These postings provide opportunities for learning, community engagement and research. The community engagement aspects actually point in the direction of research ideas that need to be further explored. These form the research foci of the faculty.
The Majekodunmi Research Laboratory and the Talabi Diabetes Research Centre are other research outlets domiciled in the faculty. They are equipped with modern laboratory facilities which serve the purposes of teaching, service and research.

Tinuade Adetutu OGUNLESI is a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences. The faculty is based within the Sagamu campus of Olabisi Onabanjo University, which houses the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, the pioneer state-government-owned medical college in Nigeria. Prof. Tinuade A. Ogunlesi is a medical graduate of Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye who got certified as a Paediatrician and Child Health Physician in April 2005 by the West African College of Physicians.
His research interest is in neonatal and perinatal medicine, particularly with focus on the interaction between clinical and community factors influencing early life childhood survival. This interest is driven by the fact that most neonatal deaths in the developing world are preventable if the associated adverse family and community factors can be curtailed. This is very relevant since more than three-quarters of neonatal deaths are due to problems of prematurity, severe intra-partum events and serious infections, all of which have community-based contributory factors. This direction of research is fuelled by his passion for public health, hence, his Master’s Degree in Public Health, which was obtained in December 2010, from Olabisi Onabanjo University.
Professor Tinuade Ogunlesi has over one hundred and fifty publications in the field of paediatrics and neonatal and perinatal medicine, published in reputable international and local peer-reviewed journals. Many of these publications are visible in PubMed and Scopus scientific databases with high citation rates. Professor Tinuade Ogunlesi is one of the leading highly cited medical researchers from Nigeria, as listed in the Stanford University Ranking of 2022. His contributions to academics span his classroom teaching experience of two decades, research, collaborations, mentoring and vast experience in the editing and publishing of medical journals.
As a Faculty Dean, Prof. Tinuade Ogunlesi coordinates the academic and administrative activities of seven departments. In his capacity as the Dean, he entrenches an excellent academic culture which translates to quality training of medical graduates, coordinated research collaborations and an enduring culture of academic quality assurance. Professor Tinuade Ogunlesi aims to have a faculty that is recognized as a citadel of medical learning and research, which directly impacts human life and quality of living.
