The Department of Nursing Science is one of the key Departments in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, clinical practice, and community service. The Department provides rigorous training in nursing education, maternal and child health, community/public health nursing, mental health and psychiatric nursing, medical-surgical nursing, and nursing administration, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to quality healthcare delivery, health policy, and scientific advancement in Nigeria and beyond.

Academic Programmes
The Department offers a Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.) degree programme, fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). Plans are ongoing to introduce postgraduate programmes at the Master’s and Doctoral levels, with specialisations in Community/Public Health Nursing, Maternal and Child Health Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, and Nursing Education and Administration.
The curriculum is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills through lectures, simulations, clinical postings, rural/community outreach, and innovative research projects, thereby aligning with global best practices in nursing education and healthcare delivery.

Through conferences, workshops, health education campaigns, and community-based projects, the Department contributes to both local and global health improvement.

Dr. (Mrs.) Oluwabusolami Esther Atekoja is a nurse scholar, educator, and researcher with expertise in community/public health nursing, maternal and child health, and infection prevention and control. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc.) from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, a Master of Science in Public Health (Epidemiology) from the University of Lagos, and a Ph.D. in Community Health Nursing from Babcock University, Nigeria.
Currently serving as Lecturer I and Ag. Head of Department, Nursing Science, Olabisi Onabanjo University, she has over six years of academic experience and more than a decade of clinical nursing practice. She has taught and coordinated a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Epidemiology, Community Health Nursing, Research Methodology, Advanced Community Health Nursing, and Entrepreneurship in Nursing.
Dr. Atekoja has made significant contributions to academic leadership and institutional development at Olabisi Onabanjo University. She has been serving as the Acting Head of the Department of Nursing Science since 2022, where she provides strategic leadership to improve academic excellence, staff performance, and research collaboration. She also serves as the Chairman of the Departmental Curriculum Committee (2019–present), playing a key role in curriculum design, review, and development to ensure adherence to global best practices in nursing education. Additionally, she has been the Chairman of the Departmental Accreditation Committee for both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) since 2022, during which the department successfully obtained full accreditation from both agencies. She further supports departmental growth as a member of the Laboratory Maintenance Committee (2019–present). At the faculty level, she is a member of the Faculty Curriculum Committee (2024–present) and the Faculty Finance Committee (2025–present), actively engaging in academic planning, policy development, and financial decision-making. Through these leadership roles, Dr. Atekoja has consistently demonstrated excellence in institutional development, quality assurance, and advancing nursing education.
Her research focuses on maternal and child health, breastfeeding practices, immunization uptake, complementary and alternative medicine, infection prevention in childcare settings, and public health issues such as COVID-19 and polypharmacy. She has published over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles in reputable local and international journals, including Elsevier, Springer Nature, Unisa Press, and Nova Science.
Dr. Atekoja actively engages in academic leadership, curriculum development, student mentorship, and collaborative research. She has also contributed to university-wide initiatives, serving on curriculum and finance committees and leading the Nursing Science Department’s curriculum committee.
