Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology is one of the bedrocks of Pathology. It is the study of biotic agents that cause human diseases. These agents are grouped into bacteria, yeasts, moulds, viruses, protozoans, and helminths. Also, medical microbiology includes the study of common arthropods, which act as vectors of infectious agents of human diseases. It is a very interesting and investigative biomedical course, which utilises numerous laboratory investigations, including microscopy, culturing, biochemical, and serological tests, to make a definitive diagnosis of the aetiology of human diseases caused by microorganisms.

The department has a research focus on the in vitro and in vivo determination of the antimicrobial efficacy of both orthodox and natural products in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). It also researches molecular epidemiology, control, and prevention of pathogenic microorganisms.

Vision

To be a leading centre of excellence in teaching and research in Medical Microbiology. Our vision is also to produce graduates who are globally competitive and locally relevant in the area of diagnosis, prevention, and control of infectious diseases.

Academic Programmes

The Department offers Medical Microbiology training to Medical students, Nursing students, and other allied medical students, including postgraduate students. Medical Microbiology training is indispensable to an effective health system because it provides pivotal skills in the diagnosis of human infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, yeasts, moulds, and parasites, which are generally present in human environments and are invisible to the naked eye in most cases.

The need for highly trained manpower in the field of diagnostic microbiology led to the establishment of postgraduate degree programmes (MSc and PhD) in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology in 1998. The department has since then been training postgraduate students in aetiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, molecular diagnosis, and control of agents of infectious diseases. The hallmark of the Department is the training of excellent health care professionals and the empowerment of postgraduate students with the relevant practical skills in “Accurate Laboratory Diagnostics, which is the Pillar of Quality Health Care.”

Research Areas

The Department fosters a vibrant academic community where students, staff, and researchers collaborate to advance diagnostic and preventive medicine. Through attendance and participation in seminars, conferences, and community-based projects, the Department contributes to both local and global knowledge.
Research in the Department spans areas such as:

  1. Epidemiology of infectious diseases
  2. Diagnostics
  3. In vitro and in vivo determination of antimicrobial efficacy of both orthodox synthetic and natural products
  4. Molecular Biology
  5. Biotechnology
  6. Bioinformatics

Facilities for Student Training

The Department is well equipped with modern facilities to support research and teaching:

  1. Teaching and Research Laboratories: for all the categories of our students
  2. Lecture Halls and Classrooms: conducive spaces for interactive and effective teaching.

Dr. ADEBOYEJO Kazeem Adeyinka is a lecturer 1, currently the Acting Head of the Medical Microbiology and Parasitology Department at Olabisi Onabanjo University. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology in 1992 from Ogun State University, now known as Olabisi Onabanjo University. He then pursued a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and graduated in 2000 from the same university. He furthered his education with a Master’s in Virology, which he obtained in 2006 from the University of Ibadan. In 2020, he earned his PhD in Virology from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.

He started his career as a medical officer with the Directorate of Health Services at Olabisi Onabanjo University from 2003 to 2007. He then joined the academic staff of the same university as a Lecturer in 2007, where he taught medical students, nursing students in virology, bacteriology, and immunology. He also taught postgraduate students in molecular biology, computer appreciation, and research methodology. He has served as a coordinator for departmental postgraduate programs in medicine and nursing.

His Area of specialisation is viral infectious diseases. He is passionate about studying the molecular epidemiology of viral infections, their pathogenesis, and the factors that determine resistance to drugs. He has published work in both local and international journals and has participated in numerous conferences, both local and international. He is a member of the American Society for Virology, the American Society for Microbiology, the Microbiology Society, the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies, and the Nigerian Medical Association.

In his capacity as Acting Head of Department, he oversees all the academic administration, curriculum development, staff coordination, and student mentoring. He is committed to fostering a culture of academic excellence, collaborative research, and innovation within the Department and sister departments.
