The faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences is located at Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Sagamu Campus. The Faculty was formed from some Departments that were originally part of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, namely the Departments of Chemical Pathology and Immunology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, and Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology.
It serves as a transition faculty for medical students, forming a bridge between the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Clinical Sciences. The Faculty receives medical students from the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (after their successful completion of the Part I MBChB Examination) and grooms them with pre-clinical studies in chemical pathology, haematology, medical microbiology, and histopathology in preparation for the clinical exposures.
The departments that constitute the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences are all dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and community services. These departments are running postgraduate programmes (MSc and PhD) in chemical pathology, medical microbiology and cancer science, respectively.
Vision
To be a leading centre of excellence in teaching and research in medical sciences, producing graduates who can compete locally and globally with their contemporaries and become more relevant in addressing medical issues.
Our History
The faculty was created out of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences in the year 2023 by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Johnson Ayodeji Agboola. The pioneer Dean of the Faculty is Dr Olooto Wasiu Eniola.
The Faculty has five departments, namely Chemical Pathology and Immunology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology, and Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
The Heads of the Departments are Dr. Amballi Adebayo Adetola for Chemical Pathology and Immunology, Dr. Owoeye Andrew Olaniyi for Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Dr. Adeboyejo Kazeem Adeyinka for Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, Dr. Ebili Henry Okuchukwu for Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology, and Dr Alabi Oyedolapo Akinyinka for the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Department.
Academic Programmes
The faculty currently hosts the following departments running postgraduate programmes, namely
- Department of Chemical Pathology and Immunology
- Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion
- Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology
- Department of Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology
- Department of Pharmacology
These departments are running MSc and PhD programmes in chemical pathology, medical microbiology, and cancer science, respectively.
