The Department of Psychology is one of the seven 7 departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences established solely for the production of competent individuals who are adequately grounded in psychological concepts, theories and the methodology required to analyse and proffer solutions to sound and psychological problems at local, national and international levels.
Vision
To train students in the science and understanding of human behaviour and the application of psychological principles, knowledge and concepts to the various underlying individual and societal realities and processes that determine and shape human behaviour in society and channel the same to national development.
Academic Programmes
The Department of Psychology offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes dedicated to developing a solid foundation for a career in professional psychology, granting students the opportunity for increased self-understanding and insights into behaviour. Additionally, the department assists students in developing the ability to carry out independent investigations in psychology and problems related to psychology while contributing to basic and applied knowledge in psychology.

Dr Ekong Akpan ESSIEN is an Associate Professor and researcher in Psychology, with expertise in Industrial/Organisational, Organisational Behaviour and Change and also a Member of the Nigerian Psychological Association (NAOP)
His research aims at determining causes associated with organisational leadership, employee turnover and turnover intentions and how these issues can be reduced to the barest minimum for an institution, organisation or enterprise to remain sustainable and productive. He has more than thirty-two publications in both national and international journals, coupled with an immense contribution to knowledge through consistent teaching and mentoring in addition to collaborations with other researchers within and outside a discipline.
Dr Essien is highly interested in conducting research in the areas of leadership, workers’ compliance, change and communication in organisations. More importantly, assessing employers and employees’ resilience and satisfaction in a de-motivational economy and developing strategies to enable these stakeholders to cope in these economies.
As the Acting Head of the Psychology Department, he coordinates all academic and administrative functions, develop curriculum, provides leadership to both academic and non-academic staff and mentors the students. He is responsible to the University Senate through the Dean of the Faculty. Dr Essien prioritises unity and commitment to academic culture, upholding good conduct, equity and academic excellence within the Department. His target is to reposition the Department and make it visible and accessible to persons intending to collaborate in research or seeking psychological help and or counsel.
