The Department of Geography was established in 1983 to provide a comprehensive training that would ensure a high level of competence of our graduates and also increase their flexibility in fitting into diverse careers in research and industry.
Our Vision
The vision is to provide the students with the necessary fundamentals in the understanding of geographical knowledge, skills and the opportunity for acquiring essential skills relevant to fundamental research, education and technological development in the Country. To provide training background for the advancement of spatial systems and forge innovative and mutually productive relationships with industry and government towards promoting high-quality programme that guides and evaluates the future of sustainability research and development in a global and diversified society.
Our Mission
The mission is to impact appropriate skills and knowledge, behaviour and attitude and to advance frontiers of knowledge that are relevant to national and global development, especially in the areas of spatial planning and management of environmental resources.
Academic Programmes
The Department of Geography offers courses leading to the award of B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Geography and Post Graduate Diploma, M.Sc. and Master’s (Professional Degree) in Geographic Information System (GIS). The programmes are designed essentially for students who have a bias towards Spatial Sciences.
Philosophy of programmes
The undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Department are designed to provide the students with the necessary fundamentals in the pursuit of sustainable man-environment interaction, and the opportunity for acquiring essential skills relevant for research, education and technological development in the country.
Our Objectives
The programme aims to promote the study of the sciences and art of Geography.
The objectives are:
- To instil in students a sound knowledge of Geography, an appreciation of its applications in different socio-cultural contexts, and to involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying the workings of society.
- To provide students with broad and well-balanced knowledge of geographical theories and methods.
- To cultivate in students the ability to apply their geographical knowledge and skills to the understanding and solution of societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere.
- To provide students with relevant knowledge and skill base from which they can proceed to further studies in a special area of Geography or a multi-disciplinary area involving Geography.
- To instil in students an appreciation of the importance of geography in spatial and environmental context.
- To develop in students a range of useful competencies in public, private or self-employment.
Research Areas
The research focus of the staff and students of the Department of Geography is tailored towards the discovery of the spatial relationships between the manifold and diverse physical and human features of the earth’s surface. It fosters geographical attitudes, ideas, principles, and proceedings which has been evolving greatly through time. Some of the research focuses include:
- Environmental Science

Dr Olayinka Waziri OTUN is a Senior Lecturer and currently the acting head of the Geography Department. His research interests are in quantitative analysis, locational analysis, applications of geographic information systems (GIS)/ remote sensing and design of spatial decision support systems (SDSS). His PhD thesis is on a spatial decision support system (SDSS). His works have contributed to the understanding of the trends in the pattern of activities of some public corporations in the air, maritime and service sectors. Over time, he has designed SDSS to find optimal road routes and best locations for public and private facilities. His keen interest in locational analysis moved him to recently look at the location of emergency services.
Dr Otun is highly interested in optimality in location and access to public and private facilities and is currently training students in the application of location-allocation models to solve public facility location problems.
As the acting Head of Department, Dr Otun oversees the Department in terms of both academic needs and general administration. He is responsible to the University Senate through the Dean of the Faculty. The Academic Staff within the Department, under his administration, enjoy sufficient academic freedom and autonomy needed for the advancement, transmission and application of knowledge. For decision-making processes and general administration, the Department of Geography operates a committee system of administration. All full-time members of staff are allowed to serve in one or more committees.
