The B.Sc. The Zoology programme produces graduates who are well-equipped in both general and practical education in zoology, to take positions in all areas of philosophical and human understanding of animals that meet the needs of society.
Our History
The Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology has been in existence since the inception of the University in 1983 under the broad nomenclature of the Department of Biological Sciences, with programmes of courses designed for the award of degrees: B.Sc. Botany, B.Sc. Microbiology and B.Sc. Zoology. The Department of Biological Sciences was established in January 1983 and housed three different programmes, namely Botany, Microbiology and Zoology. At this time, the University opened its doors to its first set of 25 candidates admitted into Biological Sciences. Six (6) out of the 25 took up the admission and graduated within record time.
With an increasing number of students from 6 in 1983 to nearly 1000 in 1999, the administration of the Department became unwieldy for the component programmes to be split into separate departments. Formal requests and procedures for the splitting were made. The Senate granted the splitting of the old Department of Biological Sciences into two: the Department of Microbiology and the Department of Plant Science & Applied Zoology in 2004. Between 2004 and 2016, the department was referred to as the Applied Zoology Option in the then Department of Plant Science and Applied Zoology. Again, for effective administration and in consonance with world best practice, the latter was separated in 2016 to form the Department of Plant Science and the current Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology.
In 2005, the NUC accredited the Applied Zoology Programme under the Department of Plant Science and Applied Zoology with full accreditation status. The report of the 2017 accreditation exercise was interim; hence, the 2019 accreditation exercise was for reappraisal of the Zoology programme. The department has been graduating students annually since the 1986/1987 session.
Academic Programmes
It is gratifying to note that the Zoology Programme has been designed based on the NUC minimum standards, taking into consideration the manpower needs of the Industries, Research establishments, Agricultural establishments, as well as the need and ability to be self-employed.
The programme consists of two (2) types of coded courses: the BIO and ZOO courses. Also based on NUC minimum standards, field work and industrial attachment are carried out. The Industrial Training Programme (I.T.) has been reworked to allow for a single period of 6 months in the rain semester of the 300 level.
At present, the Department runs Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy academic and research programmes, also in line with the manpower needs of the country.
Our Objectives
- To provide comprehensive training in theoretical and practical zoology and environmental biology to students who, after qualifying, can practise the profession in any part of the world and also be eligible for postgraduate studies leading to M.Sc. and PhD degrees.
- To train students to respond to global challenges and the needs of the Nigerian society in particular, through broad training/education in the different areas of zoology and environmental biology.
- To equip students with adequate practical skills that will enable them to function productively in society.
- To contribute to food production, public health, conservation of natural resources, environmental amelioration and overall development of science and technology in Nigeria. This shall be done via emphasis on aspects of the programme such as Parasitology, Public health, Entomology, forensics, Ecology, Environmental Biology, Invertebrate and Vertebrate Zoology, Biology of Animal Development, Histology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hydrobiology, Wildlife and Conservation of Natural Resources, Systematic and Evolutionary Zoology, Animal Behaviour, Ethno-Zoology, Ecotoxicology, Animal physiology, Genetics, Bioinformatics and animal biotechnology.
- To give adequate, effective and resourceful training needed for the national and international production of high-quality, competent and competitive zoologists who possess the attitude, character and attributes essential for building the Nigerian nation to an excellent level of societal development.

Sulaiomon Adebisi AINA is a Lecturer I and researcher in Medical Entomology, with expertise in Culicidology and General Entomology. He earned his PhD in Entomology and Pest Management in the year 2021, involved in mosquito-based research and other insect to curb their menace. He is currently serving as the Acting Head of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Studies, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria.
He has worked on the molecular classification of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes and factors affecting their vectorial capabilities. He has also researched the use of botanical pesticides in controlling mosquitoes, thereby mitigating their dangerous effects.
As Acting Head of Department, I oversee academic administration, curriculum development, staff coordination, and student mentoring. Also committed to fostering a culture of academic excellence, collaborative research, and innovation within the Department. I am passionate about the Department’s visibility and expanding its contributions to solving local and global medical entomological challenges.
