Department of Pharmacognosy

The Department of Pharmacognosy is one of the six departments in the Faculty of Pharmacy and is committed to the training of pharmacists and researchers for capacity building for the healthcare system and manpower for both the research institutes and the university system.

The Department has diverse areas of specialization which includes Phytochemistry, Ethnobotany, Ethnopharmacology, Cultivation and Conservation, Nanomedicine, Nutraceuticals, Cosmeceuticals and computational docking.

Vision

To be a centre of excellence for teaching and the development of complementary and alternative medications derived from tropical flora and fauna.

Academic Programmes

Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs are offered in the Department, with students acquiring hands-on skills in collection, preservation, extraction of crude drugs, identification of plants and secondary metabolites in crude plants, determination of adulterants in drugs of botanical sources, herbal formulations, as well as knowledge of biosynthetic pathways in plants.

Research Areas

The department has a dynamic community of students and researchers with a passion for learning through conferences, seminar presentations and research on topics that are apt as solutions to modern-day challenges in the healthcare system, particularly in a resource-poor country. Also, the department has collaborations with entrepreneurs involved in herbal products. The Nigeria Society of Pharmacognosy Zonal Office is domiciled in the Department.

Facilities for Student Training

The department has laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for teaching and research. In addition, facilities in the central laboratories in the university also complement the facilities in the department.
The Medicinal Garden of the Department has several medicinal plant species that belong to diverse families. In addition to this, a few rare and nearly extinct plant species are growing in the garden.
Also, the herbarium in the department is a bank for preserved plant species, which serve as a reference for students and researchers from within and outside the university.
