Faculty of Law

The Faculty is known for nurturing future legal professionals who are knowledgeable, analytical, and ethically grounded. We provide a rigorous legal education that blends sound theoretical understanding with practical exposure to real-world legal processes. Through experienced faculty, modern teaching facilities, and a curriculum aligned with national standards, we prepare our students to excel in legal practice, judicial service, public administration, corporate governance, and advanced legal research. Our goal is to develop lawyers who can think critically, advocate responsibly, and make meaningful contributions to justice and society.

Our History

The Faculty of Law established in the year 1983 is situated at the Main campus of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago–Iwoye in a serene environment far from the hustle and bustle associated with life in the cities.

Public Lecture Series

The Faculty of Law is noted for a series of public lectures, including the Distinguished Faculty Lecture, the Annual Faculty Lecture, and the (now late) Honourable Justice M.O. Onalaja Lecture Series, all strive to bring the town and the gown together to rub minds on contemporary issues. The year 2023 Faculty of Law Annual Lecture series was delivered by Mr. Dele Adesina, SAN. This is another distinctive feature of the OOU Law Faculty.

OOU Law Students

The OOU law students have four student law chambers named after eminent legal practitioners. The Chambers are named after

  1. Mrs Funke Adekoya (SAN)
  2. Mr Femi Falana (SAN)
  3. Mallam  Yusuf Alli (SAN)
  4. Chief Niyi Akintola (SAN).

These Chambers engage in intra- and inter-Chambers legal competitions, moot court activities, quizzes and debates. Recently, these Chambers won a legal battle on campus that 100-level students are entitled to vote during Students Union General elections and that disenfranchising them amounted to a violation of their human rights.

The students of the Faculty of Law participated in the students participated at local, national and international competitions. The most recent been the Nwazurike Competition where they came first at the national level. The same team proceeded to Germany for an International Moot Court Competition and did very well up to the semi-final stage.

The culture of making first class in the final bar examinations

The OOU Law graduates now have a unique annual culture of passing the Nigerian Bar Final examinations with a first-class grade.

Alumni Association

The body of OOU Law graduates has been supporting the Faculty of Law programme in many ways, such as the award of scholarships to indigent law students and support for conference attendance.

The OOU Law Alumni are now members of the Higher benches, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Honourable State Commissioners, Special Assistants to Governors, Speakers of State House of Assembly, distinguished academia, successful business magnates, scholars of repute and so on.

It must be pointed out that the current Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) of this University is an Alumnus of this Faculty, The current Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State, is an Alumnus of the Faculty; The Current Commissioner of Police, Kwara State is an Alumnus of the Faculty, the immediate past Commissioner of Police Ogun State who is an alumnus of the Faculty of Law. One of our Alumni was recently appointed to serve as a Judge in the Supreme Court in the Pacific region. One is serving as a Judge in the USA.  Out of a total of eight Honourable Judges of the Ogun State Judiciary appointed last year, seven were alumni of OOU  Law.  They are always keeping the flag of the faculty flying.

Facilities for Student Training

The Law complex comprises:
  1. A TETFUND-constructed administrative building
  2. Dr Olusegun Asekun Law Resource Centre;
  3. A building comprising offices for Heads of Departments and offices for Lecturers 
  4. Another TETFUND constructed building houses the Staff Common Room, the  Moot Court  Rooms and the Post Graduate Studies Complex
  5. The Law Lecture theatres I and II: linked by a walkway and
  6. The Law Library building. The general law lecture theatre can accommodate 1,500 people at a time.
  7. Tutorial Rooms, the Law Students Society’s Secretariat,
  8. The OOU Law Clinic,
  9. An office for the Advanced Diploma-in-Law Programme
  10. A waiting arena for law students in between lectures, called ‘Arena 91’ by the students.

Board of Mentors

The Faculty of Law has an enviable assemblage of distinguished personalities in society as members of its Board of Mentors and Faculty Advisory Committee. The leader of the Board of Mentors is Hon. Justice G.A Oguntade (JSC. Rtd.), while the leader of the Advisory Committee is Chief Dr Fasy A.O. Yusuf.

They come around to informally motivate staff and students on how to be the best of the best in this profession. The students are always looking up to be great achievers like the mentors.
