Department of Science and Technology Education

The Department of Plant Science is one of the foundational Departments in the Faculty of Science, dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and community service. The Department provides rigorous training in molecular biology, genetics, physiology, ecology, ethnobotany, plant pathology, Taxonomy and Biosystematics, and applied aspects of plants, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to crop improvement and development, environmental sustainability, and scientific advancement.

Vision

To be a leading center of excellence in teaching and research in Plant Sciences, producing graduates who are globally competitive and locally relevant in addressing taxonomic, agricultural, ecological, and environmental challenges.

Academic Programmes

The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in plant biology, bryology, ethnobotany, taxonomy and plant systematics, ecology, conservation, biotechnology, breeding, and crop management. Students are exposed to hands-on learning through field courses, laboratory research, and innovative projects that align with global trends in plant sciences.

Research Areas

Research in the Department spans areas such as:

  1. Plant breeding and genetics
  2. Plant taxonomy and systematics
  3. Plant Physiology and Biochemistry
  4. Ecology and Ecophysiology
  5. Plant pathology
  6. Ethnobotany and Phytomedicine
  7. Plant Conservation
  8. Molecular Biology

Facilities for Student Training

The Department is well equipped with modern facilities to support research and teaching:

  1. Teaching and Research Laboratories: for plant breeding, genetics, physiology, biotechnology, and pathology practicals.
