Realising the pivotal role of teacher education in the overall development of individuals, nations and humanity in general, and recognising the indispensability of technology, the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education is conceived as an academic unit devoted to the pursuit of excellence in research, teaching, learning and community service for the production of sound, committed and dynamic teachers and teacher educators who can effectively respond to the challenges of education in their immediate community, nation, and the world at large.
Our Vision
The Department aspires to be a leading producer of knowledgeable, skilful, dynamic and value-driven teachers in the country through defined teaching, learning and research strengths in professionalism.
Our Mission
To create a stimulating learning environment where teacher-trainees and staff will experience teaching, learning, research and service that will make them intellectually competent and competitive with others nationally and internationally. Its mission includes a commitment to reassert, in the broader community, the importance of education and research in the Arts and Social Science-related fields.
Our History
The Department of Arts and Social Science Education (ASSED) is one of the two offshoots of the former Department of Curriculum Studies and Instructional Technology (CSIT). The new name was informed by the new orientation/philosophy envisioned for the Department. It took off as a department in September 2014. The department currently runs six academic programmes in Arts and Social Sciences Education; B.A.Ed English Education, B.A. Ed French education, B.A.Ed Yoruba education, B.Sc.Ed Economics Education, B.Sc.Ed Political Science education and B.Sc.Ed Social Studies Education.
Our Objectives
The Department of Arts and Social Science Education aims to produce teachers and teacher educators who can effectively respond to the teaching, training and research challenges of the 21st-century educational system. To achieve this goal, the specific objectives of the Department are:
- Equipping the students with appropriate pedagogical skills and competencies needed for handling various school subjects in Arts and Social Sciences.
- Collaborating with Cognate Departments in relevant Faculties for the acquisition of relevant skills, knowledge and other forms of competencies needed for the production of quality teachers for the Nigerian Education system.
- Supporting governmental and non-governmental agencies in providing capacity development and research services for the enhancement of educational quality in Ogun State and Nigeria.
Facilities for Student Training
ASSED has excellent teaching resources, including a well-stocked library and computer and data-processing facilities. The library offers a stimulating environment for effective studying.
