Nigeria is an aggregation of communities and the people inhabiting them. These communities and their people use languages, religious affiliations, and other societal connections to relate to one another from time to time. The various programmes in the faculty are designed to contribute to the growth and development of human relations or interactions. The focus of the teaching and research is on culture and the heritage of humanism. Special emphasis is placed on character, good conduct, and the concept of omoluabi. We familiarise our students with our history, values and traditions. Given the fact that language is a carrier of culture and values, the teaching of and research on local and foreign languages are given a pride of place.
Vision
To create informed and responsive citizens by inculcating in students salient human values and the critical sense of appreciation to analyse problems and proffer mature and realisable solutions.
Mission
- To produce graduates who are God-fearing and worthy in character and learning.
- To produce graduates who are intellectually equipped to address societal problems.
- To contribute to the development of societal cohesion, peace and progress.
Our History
The Faculty of Arts has existed from the very beginning of the University in 1983. It is estimated that the foundation student population of the faculty was about one hundred. There were no separate departments at the inception of the faculty. Separation into departments came later, around 1984. The foundation Dean of the Faculty was Dr Oladele Taiwo, who came from the University of Lagos. He left in 1983. Following his departure, Professor Afolabi Olabimtan took over as Dean.
The faculty has grown and matured remarkably since that humble beginning. It has produced thousands of graduates who are holding their own in both public and private sectors. Their influence can be felt even beyond the shores of Nigeria. It is important to note that the Faculty of Arts was one of the first faculties to produce a First Class. This faculty has a reputation for maintaining a high academic and moral standard. The faculty is made up of excellent and reputable scholars.
Key Projects and Strategic Initiatives of the Faculty
- Elimination of the Backlog of Student Results: We shall launch “Operation Academic Redemption” to address all outstanding results. This will involve a Faculty Results Task Force, digital tools for result management, and a new timeliness framework to ensure prompt submission and processing of results.
- Alumni Engagement and Contributions to Development: We will institutionalise alumni support through a Faculty of Arts Alumni Council, an “Adopt-A-Classroom” campaign, and an Annual Alumni Homecoming Lecture to drive development and mentorship.
- Digital Transformation and Infrastructure Enhancement: A Faculty-wide Digital Upgrade Plan will introduce smart lecture halls, digitised teaching modules, and a centralised e-library to enhance learning and research efficiency.
- Research, Publication, and Grant Development Culture: We will strengthen our research ecosystem through monthly seminars, an annual colloquium, and the revitalisation of the faculty journal, along with support for accessing the TET Fund and other research grants.
- Strengthening Postgraduate Programmes: Through curriculum updates, proposal clinics, and assessor databases, we aim to improve postgraduate quality and turnaround time while fostering interdepartmental learning.
- Faculty Staff Development and Welfare: We will ensure fairness in workload, increase access to training, organise workshops on pedagogy and research ethics and introduce a Faculty Mentorship Programme.
- Promoting Ethical Leadership and Student Development: We shall champion a culture of integrity by organising ethics workshops, supporting student engagement through town halls and competitions, and nurturing leadership values.
- Community Engagement and Cultural Relevance: A Faculty of Arts Festival will showcase our cultural strengths. Community-based research will be encouraged to preserve local heritage and make the humanities relevant to societal development.
- Accreditation, Visibility, and Academic Branding: We will ensure readiness for NUC accreditations, increase visibility through media, and develop a Faculty Strategic Plan (2025–2030) with clear benchmarks.
