The Department of Cooperative and Rural Development was established for the ultimate goal to produce sound-minded and well-equipped graduates who can proffer solutions to behavioural issues emanating from human behaviour generally and in particular issues relating to cooperative and societal development; manage enterprises and organizations based on the tenets of cooperatives; manage cooperative societies and other rural as well as urban organizations on the principles of cooperatives, and solve behavioural and cooperative research problems that society faces from time to time.

The Core Vision is focused on academic excellence, where knowledge, skills, and values are pursued relentlessly to ensure the flowering of human abilities and service to the Nigerian Nation and the world at large in the wider context of cooperation and development.
Our History
Department of Cooperative and Rural Development was initially housed by the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management in the 2004/2005 session when it began. First, it was christened Cooperative and Business Management (CBM) up till 2011 and later renamed Cooperative Management and Rural Development (CMD) in 2012. Presently, the programme is now called Cooperatives and Rural Development (CRD) with its full departmental status in the Department of Cooperative and Rural Development, Faculty of Administration and Management Sciences of the University.
Academic Programmes
The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in cooperative finance, legislation, education, auditing and accounting, cooperative economics, management and supervision. Students are exposed to hands-on learning through field courses, research, and innovative projects that align with global trends in cooperative studies.

Professor Adewunmi Olubanjo Idowu is a distinguished scholar and thought leader who has risen through the ranks to become Pa rofessor in 2021 in the field of Agricultural Economics and an expert in Agricultural Finance, Farm Management and Cooperative Studies, with over twenty-six years of making significant contributions to teaching, mentorship, research, institutional leadership, and community service at Olabisi Onabanjo University. He is a graduate of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management from Ogun State University, now Olabisi Onabanjo University. He holds Master’s (MSc) and Doctorate (PhD) degrees in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. He dedicated his career to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and strengthening farm management, rural economics, and cooperative systems for sustainable development.
His research spans agricultural finance, rural livelihood and poverty, agricultural production economics, rural development, cooperative management, cooperative finance and governance, as well as quantitative techniques analysis, with a particular focus on improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers through innovative cooperative models. Professor Idowu has published extensively in reputable local and international journals and presented groundbreaking papers at conferences with aim of mentoring the next generation of leaders in his field. His works are widely cited and have influenced agricultural policy and cooperative practices in Nigeria and beyond. He is recognized for academic excellence through numerous awards and commendations, and fortified with professional credentials in corporate affairs and financial investment analysis
As a mentor and academic leader, Professor Idowu has successfully supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students, many of whom now hold key positions in academia, industry, government, and international development agencies. His teaching philosophy emphasises critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical application of knowledge to real-world agricultural and cooperative challenges. Beyond academia, he has served as a consultant to national organisations like ICOPRON, providing expertise in cooperative development, agribusiness strategies, and rural economic empowerment. Currently, he is the Head of the Department of Cooperatives and Rural Development of Olabisi Onabanjo University. He has also held several leadership positions within the university, including Sub-Dean of undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and a member of curriculum development, accreditation, research and quality assurance committees.
A recipient of multiple academic awards including Best Graduating Agricultural Student (Ogun State University, 1996), Professional Memberships of many national and international association including International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE), American Economic Association (AEA), Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA), and Econometrics Society, as well as a fellow of the Institute of Cooperative Professional of Nigeria (ICOPRON). Professor Idowu is widely recognised for his contributions to agricultural transformation and cooperative development. He remains committed to promoting sustainable agricultural practices, strengthening cooperative development and governance, and shaping the next generation of agricultural economists and cooperative economists and scientists.
