Faculty of Agricultural Production and Renewable Resources (FAPRER)

The Faculty of Agricultural Production and Renewable Resources (FAPRER) trains skilled graduates and advances research in sustainable agriculture and natural resource management. With academic programs spanning crop and animal production, aquaculture, soil science, and forestry, the faculty blends classroom learning with field-based practicals, equipping students with the technical expertise and entrepreneurial mindset needed to excel in agribusiness, research, and rural development.

FAPRER also serves as a hub for community outreach and applied research, working with farmers, government agencies, and private organisations to promote innovations that enhance productivity while safeguarding the environment. By bridging traditional practices with modern technologies, the faculty contributes to the development of Nigeria’s agricultural sector and the sustainable management of renewable natural resources.

Vision

The vision of the Faculty of Agricultural Production and Renewable Resources, Olabisi Onabanjo University, is to be a centre of excellence in agricultural education, research, and innovation, producing highly skilled graduates and solutions that promote sustainable food security, renewable resource management, and rural development in Nigeria and beyond.

Our History

The College of Agricultural Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, took off officially on 1st October, 1983, in Ayetoro, and following the suspension of the multi-campus system, was relocated to Ago-Iwoye in October, 1984. The college at inception comprised four departments: the Department of Animal Production, Crop Production, Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, and Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology.

In December 1998, in order to succinctly deliver on the mission of the college, the collegiate structure took off with the creation of two faculties, viz., Faculty of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (FAMARD) and Faculty of Agricultural Production and Renewable Resources (FAPRER). At inception, the Faculty of Agricultural Production and Renewable Resources consisted of the Departments of:

  1. Animal Production (ANP)
  2. Crop Production (CRP)
  3. Soil Science and Farm Mechanisation (SSFM) and
  4. Renewable Resources (RRS)

At present, the Faculty now consist of the Departments of:

  1. Animal Production (ANP) awarding the degree of B. Agric (Animal Production)
  2. Crop Production (CRP) awarding the degree of B. Agric (Crop Production) and
  3. Forestry Wildlife and Fisheries (FWF) awarding the degrees of B. Forestry and Wildlife Mgt. and B. Fisheries Management.

All programmes are fully accredited by the National University Commission (NUC). The Departments of Animal Production and Crop Production also run Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s and Ph.D programmes. For practical instructions, departments have well-equipped laboratories and university teaching and research farms. The faculty is blessed with excellent human resources to provide the best training in agriculture.

Academic Programmes

FAPRER  offers a range of academic programmes designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required for careers in agriculture and natural resource management. The programmes cover key disciplines such as Crop Production, Animal Production, Aquaculture and Fisheries Management, Soil Science, Forestry and Wildlife Management.

Through a blend of theoretical instruction, laboratory work, and field practicals, the faculty ensures students gain hands-on experience in modern and sustainable agricultural practices. These programmes also emphasise innovation, research, and entrepreneurship, preparing graduates to address challenges in food security, renewable resource utilisation, and environmental sustainability, while contributing to the advancement of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

  • Crop Production –Provides innovation in crop and soil sciences. It equips students with practical skills and entrepreneurial capacity for diverse agricultural careers, while supporting the community with improved crop varieties and sustainable farming practices that enhance food security, productivity, and socio-economic development
  • Animal Production – Trains students in livestock management, breeding, nutrition, and health to improve meat, milk, and other animal-based production systems.
  • Aquaculture and Fisheries Management – Provides knowledge and skills in fish farming, aquatic ecology, and sustainable management of fisheries resources.
  • Soil Science – Studies soil properties, fertility, and conservation, equipping students with tools for effective land use and sustainable crop production.
  • Forestry and Wildlife Management – Concentrates on forest conservation, biodiversity management, and sustainable utilisation of forest and wildlife resources.

Research Areas

FAPRER is deeply committed to community engagement and applied research. Its community-oriented initiatives include extension services, farmer training, and technology transfer designed to boost agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods. By working closely with local communities, government agencies, and private organisations, the Faculty promotes innovations in sustainable farming, natural resource management, and agribusiness development. On the research front, it emphasises problem-solving studies in food security, climate-smart agriculture, renewable resource utilisation, soil fertility management, animal nutrition, aquaculture systems, and biodiversity conservation. This integration of research and outreach ensures the generation of knowledge that supports sustainable development and the transformation of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
The leadership of the Faculty, under the direction of a distinguished scholar, reflects a strong commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and global relevance. Through strategic collaborations with international research bodies, universities, and development agencies, the Faculty connects local agricultural challenges with global solutions, positioning itself as a centre for knowledge exchange and capacity building. With visionary leadership, it not only drives impactful research and community-focused projects but also enhances the global visibility of its scholars and students, making significant contributions to sustainable agricultural development both locally and internationally.

Facilities for Student Training

FAPRER is equipped with modern facilities and resources that support teaching, research, and community service. These include crop gardens, livestock units, fish ponds, greenhouses, and experimental farms that provide students with practical exposure to agricultural production systems. The faculty also houses well-equipped and spacious lecture halls and classrooms for teaching and seminars, well-equipped laboratories for soil analysis, animal nutrition, aquaculture, and crop protection, as well as forestry and wildlife conservation plots for field training.

In addition, the faculty maintains a research and demonstration farm used for student projects, staff research, and farmer outreach programmes. Together, these resources enhance experiential learning, promote innovation, and ensure graduates are well prepared for professional practice in agriculture and renewable resource management.
