It provides rigorous training in clinical biochemistry, endocrinology, toxicology, molecular diagnostics, nutrition, immunology, laboratory medicine, and metabolic disorders, preparing students and researchers to contribute meaningfully to healthcare delivery, biomedical research, and innovations in medical laboratory science.
Through innovative research, teaching, and community service, the department continues to make significant contributions to the knowledge, prevention, and management of metabolic and endocrine disorders in Nigeria and globally.
Academic Programmes
The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes designed to equip learners with the theoretical knowledge, analytical competence, and practical skills required in medical biochemistry and chemical pathology. Students are exposed to:
- Core principles of Clinical Chemistry, Endocrinology, Toxicology, and Laboratory Medicine
- Research methodology and translational applications in metabolic and endocrine disorders
- Learning in quality assurance, nutrition management, molecular medicine, reproductive endocrinology, and metabolic diagnostics
- Problem-based and case-based learning in diabetes, hypertension, infertility, and cardiovascular disorders
The programmes integrate clinical exposure, laboratory research, and innovative projects, aligning with global trends in molecular diagnostics, non-communicable disease research, and personalised medicine.
Research Areas
The department fosters a vibrant academic and clinical community where students, staff, and researchers collaborate to advance the frontiers of laboratory medicine. Through seminars, conferences, collaborative research projects, and hospital-based diagnostics, the department actively contributes to national and global improvements in healthcare.
Research in the department spans areas such as:
- Endocrinology and Metabolic Disorders (Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity, Dyslipidemia)
- Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
- Toxicology and Occupational Health
- Molecular Medicine and Genomic Diagnostics
- Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolic Modulation
- Cardiovascular Risk Biomarkers and Inflammatory Indices
- Laboratory Quality Assurance and Translational Research
Facilities for Student Training
The department is equipped with modern facilities to support teaching, research, and clinical services:
- Teaching and Research Laboratories – for endocrinology, toxicology, metabolic disorders, and molecular diagnostics.
- Specialised Diagnostic Equipment – for lipid profile, hormonal assays, and oxidative stress markers.
- Lecture Halls and Tutorial Rooms – conducive for interactive and evidence-based teaching.
- Collaborative Links with OOU Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu – enabling students to integrate theoretical learning with real-time clinical diagnostics.

Dr. Amballi Adebayo Adetola is a Reader and researcher in Chemical Pathology, has passion in academia, and specializing in Endocrinology and Metabolic Disorders, with over three decades of teaching, research, and clinical experience. He earned his BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Ilorin (1984) and his MBBS from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University, 1990). He subsequently obtained an MSc (2000) and PhD (2017) in Chemical Pathology from OOU. He has also pursued professional trainings including a Certificate in Immunology (University of Ibadan, 2001), a Certificate in Molecular Medicine Diagnostic Techniques (University of Witswatersrand, South Africa, 2003), and Basic and Clinical Toxicology certification (University of Ibadan, 2015). He is currently the Acting Head of the Department of Chemical Pathology at Olabisi Onabanjo University, where he provides academic leadership, coordinates departmental administration, oversees staff and laboratories, and drives policy development and collaborations.
His research focuses on investigative measures to help in the management and prevention of complications in Diabetes Mellitus, Thyroid Disorders, Reproductive Endocrinology and Non-Endocrine metabolic disorders. He has more than Forty Five publications in national and international reputable journals and has contributed to knowledge in the field of endocrinology and metabolism through teaching, mentoring and collaborative projects.
Dr. Amballi’s passion is largely into using his research studies to assist in standard management of Endocrine and metabolic disorders to ensure long term benefits to patients and prevent complications. He is also interested in contributing immensely to using some of his works to create awareness to people in Sub Sahara Africa especially in Nigeria on measures to prevent the epidemic of non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Amballi has over 30 years of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His teaching portfolio spans General Clinical Chemistry, Endocrinology, Toxicology, Immunology and Metabolic Disorders, as well as entrepreneurship modules. He has supervised numerous MSc dissertations and PhD theses, and continues to mentor young academics and medical students into leadership roles in academia and clinical practice.
His research specialization is in endocrinology and metabolic disorders, with strong emphasis on:
Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular risk biomarkers
Hormonal and molecular basis of infertility and reproductive health
Trace elements, oxidative stress, and biochemical indices in disease monitoring
Metabolic and nutritional modulation of biochemical pathways
Quality assurance and molecular diagnostics in laboratory medicine
